Change in Charm City: Local Lessons for Long Haul Organizing

The path to economic democracy runs through cooperative principles of autonomy, independence, self-determination, and rolling up our sleeves. Featured Speakers Kate Khatib and Reverend Heber Brown III will share stories of how their work in Baltimore puts economic control back in the hands of the community. Kate is a worker-owner at Red Emma’s Bookstore & Cafe, co-founder and E.D. of the Baltimore Roundtable for Economic Development, and the Director of the Seed Commons cooperative peer loan network. In addition to being an inspirational preacher, Heber serves on the board of the North East Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (NESAWG) which covers the same region as the ECWD program. Heber organizes with the Black Church Food Security Network which partners Black farmers and urban growers with historically African American congregations.

Platforms and Workplace Democracy

Digital platforms are a critical tool in the emerging 21st century economy. Our second plenary chat will explore how useful platform tools are for fostering the systemic change needed to build a just and inclusive economy. Together we will discuss new models of worker co-ops tapping into digital organizing starting with a closer at the Staffing Co-op in Baltimore and Up & Go in New York City. We’ll discuss what a platform cooperative even is and why it matters for workplace democracy. Joseph Cureton is a Baltimore-based software engineer and chef by trade. He founded The Staffing Cooperative and is a founding member of Core Staffing, Bmore Black Techies, and Tribe Works, all projects that the fight to overcome the challenges faced by modern workers. Rachel Isreeli is a cooperative developer at the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park where she cultivates worker leadership and anti-exploitative work opportunities through direct work with coops and training community organizations to develop coops in their communities. She is also the current Board Chair of the NYC Network of Worker Cooperatives.

Cambios en la Ciudad del Encanto: Lecciones locales para la organización a largo plazo

El camino hacia la democracia económica pasa por principios cooperativistas basados en la autonomía, independencia, auto determinación, y trabajo duro. Kate Khatib y el reverendo Heber Brown III compartirán la historia de como su trabajo se ha enfocado en otorgar el control económico bajo el control de la comunidad en Baltimore. Kate es una trabajadora dueña en el Café y Librería Red Emma, confundadora y Directora Ejecutiva de la Alianza para el Desarrollo Económico en Baltimore, y Directora de la Red Cooperativa Apoyo y Préstamos Seed Commons. La Democracia en el Trabajo y las Plataformas en línea

Las plataformas en línea son una herramienta crítica en la economía emergente del siglo 21. Nuestra segunda plenaria explorará que tan útiles pueden ser las herramientas de estas plataformas para fomentar un cambio sistemático necesario en la construcción de una economía justa e inclusiva. Juntxs discutiremos nuevos modelos de cooperativas de trabajadorxs que han incursionado en el mundo digital, comenzando con un acercamiento a Staffing Co-op en Baltimore, y Up & Go en la Ciuda de Nueva York. Discutiremos qué es una plataforma cooperativista, y por qué son relevantes para la democracia en el trabajo. Joseph Cureton es un ingeniero de software en Baltimore y chef de profesión. Fundador de Staffing Cooperative, fundador miembro de Core Staffing, Bmore Black Techies, y Tribe Works, todos estos proyectos juntos en la lucha para enfrentar los obstaculos de los trabajadores en tiempos modernos.
